Dryer Sheet :

Dryer sheets are durable gauze-like tissues that are put into a dryer to avoid static cling in clothes, add fragrance and soften clothes. While drying clothes, these sheets act like lubricants to make your garments feel softer and more flexible.

Dryer sheets have evolved a great deal over the time. In 1970s the dryer sheets used to be simple flannel squares infused with fabric softener and scent but now dryer sheets are competitive consumer goods with varied fragrances which include even scents of sundried clothes. Even unscented sheets are available for people sensitive to fragrances or people who prefer to avoid them. You can buy a dryer sheet from laundromats or from a general store just like you buy other laundry products such as detergent or a fabric softener. They mostly come in pull-up dispensers that release one sheet at a time.

What makes dryer sheets so toxic?

Though dryer sheets add the fragrance and vibes to our clothes, they are very harmful to our health and environment. The dryer sheets contain harmful chemicals which can be passed from the clothes to the skin over time.

Though Food and Drug Administration approved the use of chemicals in dryer sheets assuming that the chemicals are present in lower percentages, critics argue that these chemicals are designed to linger for a lasting effect and so they have the risk of being absorbed by the body over time.  Some of the most dangerous chemicals found in dryer sheets are revealed below with their affects:

  • Alpha Terpineol: It causes central nervous system disorders, loss of muscular coordination, central nervous system depression and headaches.
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Central nervous system disorders, headaches, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.
  • Camphor: Causes dizziness, nausea, twitching of muscles and convulsions.
  • Chloroform: It is highly toxic and carcinogenic.
  • Ethyl Acetate: It causes headaches and narcosis.
  • Linalool: Causes central nervous system disorders, loss of muscular coordination, reduced spontaneous motor activity and depression.
  • Pentane: It leads to headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness and loss of concentration.

Wiser Alternatives to Dryer Sheets:

You have a bunch of tips to handle your static laden shirts and tops without bringing close the harm of chemicals to you and your loves ones.  Here we list DIY natural ways to banish static cling from your laundry.

  1. Take ¼ cups of vinegar and add it to the wash tub of laundry.
  2. If you use fabric softener, use the green ones like those produced by Mrs. Meyer’s or brands made with vegetable based surfactants, salt and natural scents.
  3. You can brush your clothes underneath with a metal hanger from top to bottom to do away with the cling.
  4. Use clothing made from natural fibers. Such clothes do not get static cling easily.
  5. Make a habit of shaking the clothes as soon as you pull them out of the dryer. This dismisses the need of dryer sheets by a great deal.
